You're here: My Science Blogging » Sci&Tech History » Article: Identity Thieves
Technology give thieves a new way to steal, through identity. It work like several computer virus which pretend to be the real file or program and then enter your computer. Identity thieves work in a similar way, they stalk on your identity in the internet, gain information about you, and then draw money from your account.
According to a Federal Trade Commission survey in 2003, about 10 million Americans — 1 in 30 — had their identities stolen in the previous year, with losses to the economy of $48 billion (NYTimes, May 30, 2006). The ratio become smaller in Arizona who had 1 in six adult identities stolen in the last five years.
Does this mean that manual way is better? According to knowledge management, the answer is no. Through technology, we can save a lot of money and time, the answer is how can we get a save technology? What kind of human-machine relation needed to have a stable and secure network?
