Can beauty be quantified? Maybe everyone has their own answer for this question based on their subjectivity, but for batik fractal, the answer is yes. Yesterday, I have interviewed a person who develops batik fractal. He tries to combine patterns which available in traditional batik with pattern from the mathematics field: fractal. My feeling about marriage between science and art is mixed. In on side, I see fractal pattern as an innovation in batik, but on the other side, it penetrate the philosophy of batik itself, especially by seeing it’s history. Moreover, does batik fractal have a root in the society
Traditional art use to have position in ritual activities, and so do batik. But what about pattern which born from computer iteration? Is it a postmodernism philosophy based on symmetry?

dear ms yuti,
we do believe that there is a link between mathematic, specifically in fractal theory, and batik patterns. The patterns, as with many traditional patterns indonesia, has interesting motifs which much resembles fractal theory, and can be quantified to see the relation of these two fields. African art (or craft) described by Ron Eglash is another interesting proof between art and fractal.
as for the marriage, i personally think that both field finds mutual love. But considering the heydays in this soil, wedding bells sure is long way to hear.

dear mr.luki, last monday I met mr. Haldani, he reccomended my to contact you. It is funny how you found this writting first.
I have a mathematical background in my bachelor degree, so for me as a mathematician, fractal is beautifull. But as a fine art, the marriage between art and mathematic is still ‘rare.’

NB: I also see relation between math and art in music using Phytagorean scale, and in architect, especially Partnenon temple which follow the Golden ratio.

Yes,it’s a delightful serendipity..mr haldani (he’s the real definition of expert) is a competent senior lecturer and researcher for our project, not to mention a good friend.
Im excited to read that you have background in mathematic, and have time to see the art/design world.A guy who wrote unfinished classic just got his piece revamped revamped using algorithm. A professor in China ( in generativeart.com)said that city can be predicted.Our capital city governor (not sure he’s expert)sure would like to use that.

It is a nice suggestion, it reminds me to several books in math library which is very interesting. I will try to re-fresh my memory about this subject.
