Scientist & Culture

What influence someone in making a decision? As a scientist, rational, scientific and efficient are some points that might have been considered. Moreover, scientists are not just scientist; they are also Japanese, German, Brazilian or Canadian. In Science & Technology in a Multicultural World, David J. Hess pointed that nationality also influence how the scientist work. It is the anthropologist Roberto Kant de Lima which notes that from the Latin perspective Americans appear rigid and inflexible. For example, in helding a meeting, everyone get the same allocated time to speech except for a few selected speakers. Kant reasons that this system reflects equality. While in Brazil, the meeting is much more flexible. Papers can be conducted until the last minute and panel can be extended beyond its allocated time. The length of time is used to signal hierarchy among the speakerss and panelists rather than equality.
