The understanding of human genomes and the ability to “read” and “document” human genome sequences have a number of unique characteristics as well as some of the more genome generic ones pertaining to other scientific progress that have raised issues for concern over its ethical and social implication, or used to called ELSI(APEC, 2003).
A several point which pointed by Thailand in APEC foresight seminar in 2003, deals with questions about how scientific research been conducted, equitable partnership between the more developed and less developed countries, and how to make use of technologies and the information generated about our genetic make up.
ELSI researches have been conducted in order to answer the questions above. Based on its study, genome development should be more attentive to the broader societal context besides their scientific world full of intellectual challenges and excitement. It also point out the needs for the society at large to be interested in sophisticated scientific issues, no matter how complicated they may be and to be actively engaged in the debates about their potential impact to ensure maximal benefits and minimal negative consequences.
