From Laboratories to the World

yuti — June 4, 2007 / 11:28 am

In 1881, French semi-popular and scientific press is full of articles about Pasteur laboratories work. Scientist, journalist, hygienist, focus their attention on a few microbes which observe under microscope. Laboratories became bounder-less because observation was not only done by the scientist in laboratories, but also by journalist which observe the scientist work. The situation became observation under observation, a repetition in a different size of scale.

What make Pasteur work became a national issue, or even made him as a celebrity? Bruno Latour, in his research about Pasteur work (1983) said that his success is because he transfers himself and his laboratory into the mist of a world untouched by laboratory science. A laboratory right on the farm side, the micro-organism activities that can be observed, and translating each item into their own terms so their terms is also work on the field(farm) are a few examples of translation, change that accommodate multi-actors interest.

The presence of multi-actors, makes knowledge spread from limited into larger community become unique. This uniqueness can be observed by seeing its translation every time the network extended. For example, if we had a journey, like Mr. Bean did in his holiday, and met someone new. Our action can be change without changing our target. In Mr. Bean’s holiday, change can be seen when he take a trip by a car with a woman that he never know before, and still go to the same targeted location. In a more serious situation, this change is also possible, as long as the target is still accomodated in the translation.
