You're here: My Science Blogging » Discovery » Article: New Enzyme Could Revolutionize Plastics Production, Research Found
Many biotechnological processes in petrochemical industry are risky to environment. The process of making polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA for short) or acrylic glass, for instance.
But recently, the researchers from University of Duisburg-Essen and the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ), finally found a new technology that is far more environmentally friendly in the making of PMMA, that polymerised from methyl methacrylate. An enzyme produced from natural raw materials such as sugars, alcohols or fatty acids could be used for the biotechnological production of a precursor of MMA.
