It was revealed in NewScientist that finding the wreckage might explain why the mission of NASA’s Mars Polar Lander failed in 1999.
Alfred McEwen of the University of Arizona in Tucson, US, said that if they can find the Mars Polar Lander and be convinced they understand what they’re looking at, it might provide some clues as to what went wrong.
Mars Polar Lander was used to study the Martian climate as well as soil and ice close to the planet’s south pole until it’s gone when it’s landed.
