Anthrax happens in humans and pigs, the potentially deadly disease which is caused by a toxin secreted by the spore-forming bacterium Bacillus anthracis.
When anthrax affects humans, it is usually due to an occupational exposure to infected animals or their products. As it is known, Anthrax infection can occur in three forms: cutaneous (skin), inhalation, and gastrointestinal. Anthrax can also be spread by eating undercooked meat from infected animals.
After Max Planck Researchers Discover A Protein Which Is Deadly For Anthrax Bacteria in 2005, the research on anthrax might now pave the way towards the development of new therapies for the fatal lung form of anthrax.
By now, scientists have identified a chemical that could be used as a new drug against anthrax. Jurgen Brojatsch, Ernesto Abel-Santos, and colleagues identified seven chemicals that block the germination of cultured anthrax spores. They also showed that one of these compounds, 6-thioguanosine, blocked the spores’ germination inside mammalian cells, thus blocking anthrax infection.
They plan to test 6-thioguanosine in mice infected with the anthrax bacterium, with a compound which is known as anticancer agent with well-studied pharmacological properties.
