American Scientist reported, two drinking incidents are listed in the report released by NASA on Friday. In one case, an astronaut warned that a fellow astronaut was too drunk to fly a T-38 trainer jet after their scheduled shuttle flight had been canceled. The other case involved a NASA astronaut flying to the International Space Station on a Russian Soyuz spacecraft launched from Kazakhstan.
Of course, this issues is one of ‘must have concerned’ mental health, behavior, and management issues. This concern is such a warning to the potential safety problems that can’t be ignored, and said NASA was taking steps to ensure that flight surgeons, trainers and astronauts feel free to communicate safety issues to senior managers.
Hmm, something clearly seems to be broken in NASA’s system of astronaut oversight. But, it’s an inescapable fact that human spaceflight involves humans, isn’t it?
