Summer solstice for this year will occur on June 20, 2008 at 23:59 UTC. During his event, the Sun appears to be directly overhead at noon for places situated at latitude 23.44° north, known as the tropic of Cancer. This event marks the beginning of summer in northern hemisphere and winter in southern hemisphere.
The word “solstice” (Sol + stice) derives from a combination of Latin words meaning “sun” + “to stand still.” As the days lengthen, the sun rises higher and higher until it seems to stand still in the sky. As a major celestial event, the Summer Solstice results in the longest day and the shortest night of the year in the northern hemisphere, and otherwise in the southern hemisphere.
After the summer solstice the Sun follows a lower and lower path through the sky each day until it reaches the point where it is in the sky for exactly 12 hours again (known as “Equinox” point).
